Dear foodies,

I’ve been away in Belgium over Easter, hence no restaurants to report on this weekend. However, I did visit a few nice Dutch eetcafes recently that I thought I’d share with you…

Cafe Rousseau: gezellig, book-lined, spacious cafe filled with vaguely literary-looking types. Good steaks, although the chips and fried parsnips tasted like the oil in the deep-fat fryer hadn’t been changed recently enough. If I could give a star for the waiter, I would. Girls, he is hot!

Cafe Berkhout: Good service in a good location right opposite the Heineken museum. Simple but well-made and tasty chicken sate and chips, steaks with red wine or pepper sauce, new potatoes and vegetables. Fish tempura with cous cous was a strange alternative to the hamburgers that were off the menu…

Cafe Westers: Friendly Oud-West institution, perfect for a drink and a simple supper after work. The food is predictable but tasty.

De Eettuin: A good selection of eetcafe staples in the heart of the Jordaan. The service was friendly; I wasn’t so sure about the quality of the meat but it was hard to tell from one pork dish.

Kop van Jut: a stone’s throw from the Leidseplein, this cosy eetcafe welcomes tourists and locals alike. The food comprises eetcafe favourites: chicken sate, steaks and schnitzels.

Normal service will soon resume!

Yours,

Amsterdam foodie
