Coffee and alcohol

There are times in even the Amsterdam foodie’s life when food is low on one’s list of priorities. Emotions run high; appetite runs low. And there are two things necessary when you can’t eat and can’t sleep: coffee and alcohol. The former to keep you awake at work after four hours’ sleep a night, and the latter to ensure that at least those four are possible… Here are a few of my favourites:

Koffie Salon, Eerste Constantijn Huygenstraat 82
A stained glass affair, where the coffee is expensive but strong enough to wire even the hardiest of insomniacs.

The American Hotel, Leidsekade 97
Posh coffee and chocolates in an art nouveau environment.

Café Eylders, Korte Leidsedwarsstraat 47
My local, where the barmen have seen me laugh and cry and everything in between, and still treat me like royalty.

Café Papeneiland, Prinsengracht 2
Atmospheric drinking establishment where the clientele are nearly as old as the building.
