My first American Thanksgiving

It sort of surprises me, given how many dinners I’ve cooked in my life, that there are certain celebrations that I’m only just getting round to hosting at the age of 32. That’s partly because things like Christmas and Easter are usually times when you see your family – and, my parents having a significantly bigger house than I do, this means they generally end up doing the cooking. Last December, however, I celebrated my first adult Christmas in my own tree-decorated apartment in Amsterdam with friends. And a few days ago – due to a certain persistent American who didn’t manage to make it back to Texas – I found myself cooking my first Thanksgiving dinner for seven guests.

After a few days of research, I came up with a menu that seemed suitably American but that wasn’t going to disturb the “I Can’t Believe Anyone Would Cover Sweet Potatoes With Marsh Mallows” European members of the party. What’s more, the leftovers have turned out to be almost as tasty as the original meal. Turkey bonus!

The photo of my attempt at pumpkin pie caused possibly a record number of “likes” on my Facebook page, so I thought I’d share the evidence here as well…

The main event: roast turkey, sausage, fennel, apples and chestnut stuffing, sprouts with bacon and shallots, mashed sweet potatoes, and corn on the cob

Dessert: the famous pumpkin pie with caramelised pecan nuts

Leftovers, day 1: turkey gumbo, a Louisiana classic!

Leftovers day 2: turkey and corn chowder
