Ten foodie things to do if you’re stuck in Amsterdam

No one can pronounce it, but it’s causing more havoc than Take That splitting up in 1996. Yep, it’s volcano fever here in Amsterdam, which means that those of you who live here and were trying to go on holiday are probably bored, while those of you who don’t live here and were trying to go home are probably stoned, hungry and short on cash.

So here’s a foodie’s guide to what to do whilst stranded in my (currently sunny!) city; some are free, others just a few euros…

  1. Take a stroll down two of Amsterdam’s foodiest streets: Haarlemmerstraat and Utrechtsestraat. Window shopping is free!
  2. Have a coffee in the Westerpark (there are at least four cafés), after saying hello to the animals at the children’s farm.
  3. Get a wood-fired pizza from La Perla and an ice cream from the Gelateria in the Jordaan.
  4. Cycle north into Waterland – stop to buy some sheep’s milk cheese from Dikoeve farm in Ransdorp…
  5. …then have a well-deserved slice of appelgebak from Het Schoolhuis in Holysloot.
  6. Sit outside on the terrace at Bar Brandstof – the city’s new ‘it’ bar.
  7. Head down to the Amsterdamse Bos for a wander through the woods to the goat farm – sample the fresh goat’s cheese and honey.
  8. Spend an hour at one of the city’s markets: the organic Noordermarkt or Nieuwmarkt on Saturdays, or the bustling, daily, local Ten Katemarkt or Dappermarkt.
  9. Browse the shelves of the Kookboekhandel (cook book shop) on Haarlemmerdijk for inspiration.
  10. Pop into Duikelman’s kitchen shop for a new mandolin or chef’s knife (just remember not to leave it in your hand luggage if you ever make it onto a plane).
