Hi Vicky,

Just thought I would mention for all the ex-pat Brits pining for decent Fish and Chips, that Cozy Bar, on Sint Jacobsstraat (off Nieuwezijds Voorburgwaal) do quite a good version. They also do really, really good tapas style food, freshly cooked every night and you can get a decent cup of tea there as well!
The fish and chips isn't haute cuisine, but it is good.

They have decent beers and a good selection of cocktails too.

Regards,
Jarrod.

Hi Vicky,

Le Pescheur is on Reguliarswardstraat, opposite a really nice, chilled out bar, "The House of Rising" which bills itself as a fashion bar, but is really nice, laid back and the only (non) gay bar in the village, sorry, straat!

(If you don't watch Little Britain, you won't get the above reference!)

Cheers,
Jarrod.

@Michel, I love Lebanese food! But don't appreciate the advertising ;-)
@Mel, not even heard of Le Pecheur - thanks for the tip!
@Merel, I do know Roots and have been meaning to go there for a while...
@Jarrod, I don't know anywhere that specifically caters for people dining alone, but why don't you try one of these secret dining concepts (like the one I used to do: Hidden Kitchen)? You can generally turn up by yourself and then meet you people over dinner - win win!

Hi Vicky,

Any recommendations for a good restaraunt for a solo (boo hoo) birthday meal - ideally somewhere where they don't treat single customers like lepers?

Cheers,
Jarrod.

Hi Vicky, I just browsed through you're website, looking good. Also like the concept of an app/audio tour. Have you tried restaurant Roots already? They changed their concept and are (almost) exclusively using Dutch products for their menus now. Cheers, Merel

Hi Vicky,

Well, after months of promising myself a meal there I finally went to 'Le Pecheur' on a busy Saturday night. It was 19:00 and was told I could eat if I was out by 20:00 (in the end, they weren't actually bothered what time I finished).

The meal was, to be honest, superb, much better than anything else I have had in Amsterdam, a Provencal fish soup to die for, joyously thick and perfectly seasoned, then grilled fillet of brill with perfectly cooked veggies and to round it off Tarte Tatin (the first time I'd actually had this dish - go figure!). It was all excellent, the house wine (Sauvignion Blanc) was great and it was surprisingly inexpensive at 38 euros! A proper bargain for such excellent food.
