Dining distrations: Burgers Patio

Please note that since writing this blog post, Burgers Patio has closed down

So, to distract myself from the horror that was January, I’ve been going out. Too much. Which is probably why it’s taken me about two weeks to publish this review. Still, better late than never…

A friend of mine used to work at Burgers Patio (I’ve often wondered why it’s not “Burger’s Patio” – surely a grammatical error?) and I’ve always kind of liked its rough-around-the-edges charm. The menus are on blackboards and the waiting staff are all rather good-looking but not in an annoying way. (If you know what I mean?!)

I had a rich and delicious fennel soup to start, with some warm duck rillettes (actually more confit than rillettes) nesting in the middle. It sounds like an odd combination but it worked. My friends also had rather glamorous-looking fresh spring rolls with Chinese(ish) characters written in sauce on the plate. As you do.

Next up, I went for a surf-n-turf combination of Iberico pork chops, shrimp sausage and a quenelle of chorizo paste. If you’ve ever eaten something that looks like a sausage and tastes like a prawn, you’ll agree it’s a bit of a trompe d’œil experience – but I liked it. The chorizo paste was perhaps a bridge too far, and would have been better served on a crisp over-sized crouton, but the flavor itself packed a punch. My friend reported that her chicken dish tasted as bland as it looked, which is unfortunate given that dinner in general was going so well.

Dessert was ordered, but I can’t remember what anyone had. It was someone’s birthday, so sparklers were involved. As was wine – hence the memory loss. I also can’t remember how much dinner cost, which probably means it was something unremarkable like €40-50 each.

Shoddy grammar aside, Burgers Patio is worth a visit.
