Foodie weekend: truffles and cheese

I knew I’d moved to the right neighbourhood when I discovered that my local highstreet (Haarlemmerstraat) held it’s own annual food fair. It’s on the first Saturday in September, when the weather may or may not allow for al fresco grazing on the multitude of tasting plates on offer. Here were some of the highlights for me…

Lekker hapjes from Meeuwig & Zn. at Check Your Oil (shop assistants quite lekker too):

Celeriac remoulade, sausage and horseradish

Walnut salad with cheese

The Brits representing themselves, in a WI sort of way:

Produce from England

Produce from the island

We didn’t have room for these bonbons, but they looked amazing:

Unlimited Delicious

(Incidentally, I hope they did come from Unlimited Delicious as I can’t actually remember – sorry if I am wrong!)

Assorted goat’s cheese:

Goat's cheese mecca

I turned the truffle cheese into a pasta dish with more truffle oil. The stall holder spoke to me as though I was quite mad: ‘you want to grill truffle cheese? where did you get the recipe from?’ ‘…erm, van mijn hoofd?’ I replied, not making the situation any more convincing. Anyway, I am now feeling smug. I was so right.

Restaurant of the month!
