October: Comfort me with apples

Well, it really has been quite the gastro weekend. The question is not what to write, but where to start?

The beginning might make sense, but I fear that if I start with Friday night then I may not make it to Sunday before the end of the month. And I am aware of that fact that, having committed to my monthly ‘seasonality’ post, it is almost the end of October and I have yet to disclose this month’s ingredient.

Apples. Dutch apple tart, or ‘appelgebak’, has to be possibly my favourite coffee-and-cake mid-afternoon treat. Which is saying something, from the woman who barely eats – let alone makes – desserts. Dutch apples being in season, I decided that yesterday was the day to overcome my fear of baking and reacquaint myself with my scales. The result was surprisingly good, though I can’t take the credit for any of it – the recipe came from Cecily of Eat Dutch, with whom I was lucky enough to share an office, and who had a wonderful habit of baking cakes for colleagues…

Having said all that, if you’re after a simple yet elegant dessert that takes under two minutes to make, you could do far worse than buying some fresh autumnal figs, drizzling them artily with runny honey (acacia preferably, but you know, credit crunch ‘n all that) and sprinkling them with toasted almonds. No weighing or measuring required. Yay.
