Holland food festival

Sunday marked the birth of the Holland Food Festival in the Westergasterras in the Westerpark. Courtesy of Slow Food, farmers and food producers from around the Netherlands congregated to tempt me into spending lots of  money. And succeed they did!

I came home with Dutch sheep’s-cheese feta; pork and oregano air-dried, cured sausage; dried, honeyed, seasonal cranberries; some kind of bacon that may or may not taste of sauerkraut (my Dutch was leaving a little to be desired); and grainy mustard from a man wearing clogs and red socks! Expect recipes to follow…

Restaurant of the month!

oh, that all sounds lovely and folk in a nice way!!! I should have been there!!! next time, next time…

only read about the holland food festival today. too late :-(

ingredients you picked up sound exciting – wish i could have gone

did the bacon taste of sauerkraut? and isn’t that German?

The sausage fascinates me – but I’m especially interested in the cheese (am a total cheeseaholic). Would love to hear about those!!! ;)

Well, the sausage ended up in my parsnip and chestnut pasta dish, which was exceedingly rich! But the cheese went into a baby spinach, sugar-snap pea, pistachio and mint salad. It was milky and mild, without that acidic tang you sometimes get with feta. And better still: it came from Ransdorp, a little rural village in Waterland, less than an hour’s bike ride north of Amsterdam!

Oh and by the way, I haven’t tasted the bacon yet! And yes, sauerkraut is German, but the guy said something about making it with sauerkraut to me… I’ll keep you posted!
