Restaurants I’ve eaten in recently that I think deserve a mention…

Does what it says on the tin.

Abyssinia: Much like Azmarino in both food and atmosphere, Abyssinia affords a fun and sociable way to eat an interesting cuisine. The clue is in the title. Dishes come heaped on East African pancakes, while everyone dips in with their hands. Prices are more than reasonable, and the veggie dishes are every bit as delicious as their carnivorous counterparts.

Thai & Co: Small, cosy Thai close to Centraal Station. The salad we had was heavy on red onion, but the curry was tasty. This Thai is in no sense life changing, but it hits the spot when you’re looking for a taste of Thailand in town.

Sawadee Ka: Currently my favourite Thai in Amsterdam (though I’ve not yet been to Take Thai on Utrechtsestraat, which I’ve been told is phenomenal), Sawadee Ka is off the tourist track but within walking distance of the Leidseplein. I can’t resist the mixed starter for two, which pairs excellently with a pot of jasmine tea. The curries come with their own little candle-heated stands, and the rice is served in silver patterned urns that add to the ambience.

So much choice by now… I’m sure there must be quiet a lot of variety in restaurants in Brussels too, but I think I’ll come to Amsterdam to be guided to somewhere interested by you!

Your comments on Thai curries remind me of our holiday last year and, when I look out of the window and see the rain pouring down and the wind blowing a gale, it makes me long to be back there. Perhaps the next time we are in Amsterdam you could take us to the Take Thai restaurant to check it out!
